Our Physiotherapists
Alison Tarleton Hodgson - Grad. Dip. Phys. MCSP

Alison qualified from Kings College Hospital, London in 1984. She has a particular interest in outpatient musculoskeletal problems and sports injuries, especially the prevention of recurrent conditions.

Alison became a Physio First Quality Assured Practitioner in January 2018.

Alison uses Kinetic control movement and assessment techniques regularly as part of the therapy, with manual skills and manipulation and soft tissue massage being used along side as necessary. Individually based and tailored exercise programs and "self help" techniques are developed for each client where appropriate.


Alison has also done recent work with K taping and activation therapy both of which have proved helpful in the rehabilitation of sports injuries and in dealing with chronic conditions.

Gemma Stewart - BSc (Hons), Grad. Dip. Phys. MCSP

Gemma graduated as a physiotherapist from Bristol the University of West England in 2009. She then completed her junior rotations at Poole Hospital NHS foundation trust. Since 2011 she has been working as a senior in the outpatient department there dealing with musculoskeletal conditions. She also works within the paediatric department assessing and treating musculoskeletal conditions in children aged 4-16. Gemma uses a variety of treatment techniques including soft tissue massage and release, joint mobilisations and the devising of personal home exercise programmes where appropriate.

Gemma has a keen interest in sports injuries having played netball at an international level for England since 2005-2013. She has also worked at the British University Games in 2009 dealing with acute sports injuries and their rehabilitation. This included a variety of sports ranging from fencing, judo and tennis to football, volleyball and basketball.

Helen Gordon - BSc (Hons), Grad. Dip. Phys. MCSP

Helen qualified from Middlesex Hospital, London in 1989, she has a wealth of experience in the physiotherapy field. Helen has worked as a senior therapist in both hospitals and GP settings within the acute musculoskeletal area. Helen also has significant knowledge in ways of managing chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Helen uses a variety of acupuncture, relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques together with any appropriate manual therapy.

She has her own private practice in Wareham (www.warehamphysiotherapy.co.uk) as well as working at the Birchwood Clinic.

Andy Bennett - BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy - BSc (Hons) Health Science

Andy qualified from Bournemouth University with a first class honours degree in 2008 & has worked in a variety of musculoskeletal settings ever since. He is an accredited member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. He has experience working both in Private Practice and the NHS. He also has experience working with post-operative orthopaedic patients in the days immediately following their operations to further down the recovery line. Andy is currently Clinical Lead in his NHS job for Romsey and Eastleigh.

Andy uses a variety of treatment techniques including soft tissue release, joint mobilisations, taping and electrotherapy and is well aware of the common need to incorporate a home exercise program to help further the gains made in treatment sessions. As a father of two young children, he is mindful of external demands on his patients and will tailor exercises to the individual. To continue his professional development, he has just started his first module in exercise and rehabilitation at Masters level and is planning to gain his Masters in Physiotherapy on a part time basis.

Stacey Hamilton BSc (Hons), MCSP

Stacey graduated as a physiotherapist from Salford University in 2011 and as a junior physiotherapist worked within the community of Tameside and in the acute inpatient setting at Tameside Hospital before moving down to Poole in 2014.

Whilst working within the NHS, Stacey also worked part time at Stalybridge Celtic FC and then Glossop North End FC treating the first team players from on-field injuries back to full fitness. Stacey has also completed her Level 4 VTCT qualification in Sports Massage and through this, worked at the Olympic Games in London 2012.

Our Practice

Birchwood Private Physiotherapy Poole is a practice of highly skilled therapists all of whom are fully qualified, with a range of experience. All therapists are state registered, recognised by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), members of Physio First - the Private Physiotherapists Association, and belong to the Acupuncture Association of Physiotherapists.

The Clinic is registered with BUPA, AXA PPP and other major insurance companies.

As a Clinic, our policy is to liaise with the clients GP/Consultant, and if appropriate, family, to ensure maximum benefit of all treatments given.

We offer '1 to 1' Pilates appointments which are taught by a qualified Physiotherapist. Pilates can help focus on maintaining good core stability to enable your body to move freely.

Since Sept 2015 we have been working closely with LeAF Elite Athlete Academy

(14-19yr olds) delivering the physiotherapy service for potential Elite Athletes.
